Can be tricky to successfully propagate and cultivate.  The soil needs to be neutral to slightly acid (Ericaceous), moist with organic matter, but well drained.  If the likes of Camelias / Azaleas / Rhododendrons do not thrive in your garden these variety will struggle.   They thrive in cool damp areas, with partial shade and sheltered from cold dry winds.  Height: 60-90cm (24-36in).Sow Feb- Jun or Sep to OctGrowing medium needs to be well drained with added grit.If sowing outside of periods of frost the seeds need to be pre-chilled (Stratified) to break their dormancy.  The seed packet can be placed in a fridge fro 10-14 days and then sown.Sow finely on the surface of pre-wetted growing medium (Ericaceous)and only very lightly cover with fine vermiculite or finely sieved compost.Seal the container inside a clear polythene bag or cover with glass.  This maintains the moisture level which is critical.  Place the container outdoors in a cool glasshouse, cold frame or sheltered location out of the sun.Always water from the bottom to avoid disturbing the seed.Germination can take from two weeks to several months and if the conditions are not correct the following year.  Once seedlings have 2-3 leaves they can be carefully pricked out by handling the leaves only as the stems are vulnerable to damage.  Grow on in a cool damp location prior to planting out.

Germination notes IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY - Please note seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, and type of soil, watering, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media.
